Wythe Bed - CW Collection

Sale price$5,391.00

Give pride of place to this neoclassical pencil-post bed accented by hand-carved urn finials. With clean lines and understated elegance, the heirloom-quality Wythe bed will bring a distinguished note to your home décor. The bed is named for George Wythe, one of the most influential Americans of his time. A Williamsburg resident, Wythe was the first American law professor, a noted classics scholar and Virginia judge, and mentor to Thomas Jefferson.

Handcrafted by a 6th-generation furniture maker with fine attention to detail, the Wythe pencil post bed will last for generations to come. Each solid mahogany post is hand-turned on a lathe and finished with hand-chiseled finials. The bed is pieced together with 8-way bolting concealed by solid brass lacquered bed-bolt covers that create lovely ornamentation. Floating construction keeps the headboard from putting pressure on the posts when the wood expands and contracts. The headboard is also finished on both sides, meaning it can be turned if one side shows signs of wear, thereby extending the life of the piece.

Inspiration

Four-post beds were an extremely popular colonial style. Adorned with canopies and curtains, they created a room within a room and served the practical purpose of providing privacy and warmth. From the simple to the ornate, they can be found throughout Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area and are one of the lasting legacies of colonial-era design.
